about
obelisk - lightbender // don toliver - after party
This work was originally premiered at the official after-party for SOFT CENTRExVIVID SYDNEY 2022, during the debut performance of Winged Mantis Emerald Dream Machine (Index x Obelisk).
Commissioned by the artists themselves for this performance, this piece blends Obelisk's own feverish drum work with Toliver's processed and disembodied yelp, calling us to create our cathartic new reality as we "pull up" and "[come] in with a bottle" "tripping".
We do indeed "love to get naughty", yet is this out of self-interest, collective utopianism, or as a capital-serving release valve in our alienated neo-liberal existence?
Lacan writes that "materiality is singular in many ways... cut a letter into small pieces, and it remains the letter that it is". Of course the figure of the mashup artist immediately springs to mind - one simply being the letter cutter rather than the writer of an original work, where the materiality of the original work is always the desirable essence of the cut letter (in this case, Obelisk's unscrupulous breaks).
The tiniest event can tear a hole in the grey curtain of clubbing, which has marked the horizons of collective possibility for young supposed-Leftists for too long. From a situation in which nothing can happen, suddenly bending light is possible again.
